Syphilis
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that affects men and women. There has been a countrywide increase in cases of Syphilis within the last 6 months especially among men who have sex with men, and in women over 30.Like Chlamydia, you can pass on syphilis without realizing that you have an infection as there may be no symptoms. It is relatively easy to pass on, and because of condom use, the usual route of transmission in by oral sex. It can also be passed by sharing sex toys.
Symptoms
If present, the symptoms are the same in men and women. These are divided into three stages:
- First Stage (Up to 12 weeks after infection)

- One or more sores (usually painless) where the bacteria entered the body
- Second Stage

- The second stage symptoms occur up to six months afer infection, if the original infection has not been treated. These will occur after the original sores have healed, and may include:
- A painless rash
- Flat, warty-looking growths on the vulva in women and around the anus in men and women
- High fever
- Flu-like illness, tiredness and reduced appetite with swollen glands
- White patches on the tongue or roof of the mouth
- Patchy hair loss
- Third Stage

- This is also known as the latent stage, and may give no symptoms at all.
- However, if the syphilis is not treated it may go on to cause serious damage to the heart, brain, eyes, other internal organs, bones and nervous system, which may be fatal.
Diagnosis
At Clinic Express, we diagnose Syphilis using a blood test. This may be done at any time, but in some cases the test may need repeating.
Treatment
Syphilis is easily treated with antibiotics.
