A sexually transmitted infection (STI) is an infectious disease which is passed from one person to another through intimate sexual contact.
STDs are on the rise
There has been a countrywide increase in cases of Syphilis within the last 6 months especially among men who have sex with men, and in women over 30.
An STI can be passed from female to male, male to female, male to male, female to female; through vaginal sexual intercourse and other intimate sexual contact, e.g. oral sex, anal sex, mutual masturbation. The more sexual partners a person has, the greater their risk of contracting a STI. Some STI's can have long term complications such as infertility and cancer.
Symptoms
Many people with STI's do not have symptoms and apart from obvious outbreaks of warts or herpes it is not possible to tell if a prospective partner is infected. If you or your sexual partner have any of the following, you may well have an STI and need assessment as soon as possible.:
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Pain on passing urine
- Lower abdominal pain
- An ulcer or wart on your genital skin
- Pain during intercourse
